Writing Comment: The analysis of the characters Luísa and Ema in the novels Cousin Basil and Madame Bovary lead us to reflect on the complexities of adultery in Realism. The way these works portray the female condition and its influences in 19th-century society reveal not only literary but also social and cultural issues. The comparison between the works highlights the duality between loves and betrayals, showing that the theme of adultery can be approached in different ways, evidencing the nuances and contradictions of human behavior. Literary Realism, with its search for faithful representation of reality, provides a deep look at the love relationships and consequences of the choices made by the characters.
