On the beginning of the first one, with observations on Montaigne works, some general characteristics of the essay are analyzed, considering form and content. On the same block, it is also shown the results of a brief statistical research on the availability of English essays in Brazilian publications; and it is also explained the theoretical and practical criticism used on the selection, translation and review of the essays presented on the second content block. In this part, are gifted essays written by the following writers: Samuel Johnson, William Cowper, Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charles Lamb, Charles Colton, Leigh Hunt, William Hazlitt, Thomas Macaulay, Thomas de Quincey and Harriet Martineau.
